Where the Heart Goes to Heal

As the Architect of Record, Hussey Gay Bell designed an environment that inspires and promotes healing. Project scope consisted of the build-out of approximately 25,000 SF of shell space on the 5th floor of the existing Heart and Vascular Building located on the campus of Memorial University Medical Center. The build-out included 32 critical-care beds, comprised of 6 ICU beds and 26 step-down beds. The program also included all other associated support spaces such as nurses’ stations, linen supply, equipment storage, staff lounge, nurse and physician offices, nourishment stations, physician workroom, and a new elevator. The $5.5M project was completed in 2014; with FF&E the total project was $9M.

For nearly 10 years prior to the completion of this project in 2015, the first two floors of the Heart & Vascular dedicated space had met Memorial Health’s needs but growth in the area had led to the need for more patient beds for cardiovascular patients. In response, Memorial elected to support design of a new wing slated to host the most technologically advanced, state-of-the-art critical care available in this region with emphasis on in-patients suffering from heart attacks, strokes and vascular disease.
